The short answer
The Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro makes the most sense when you want a countertop oven that can tackle different kinds of meals. If your real wish is simply “make a small portion of fries with less fuss,” its size may feel like more commitment than relief. Think about the meals you actually repeat, not the number of settings you might try once.
There is something appealing about one appliance earning its place on the counter. But that feeling fades quickly if it crowds the chopping board you use every evening. Measure first; imagine your normal dinner routine second.
Why we looked at it this week
On October 19, 2026, Google Trends Explore for the search term air fryer, United States, past seven days, all categories and Web Search, showed “smart countertop oven vs air fryer” as a Breakout rising related query. This is growth in that comparison query, not proof that searches for this Breville model increased. It is also not an Amazon sales ranking or a measure of product quality. The comparison prompted this review.
What the BOV900 offers
Breville lists 13 cooking functions, including air fry, bake, roast, proof and dehydrate. Its one-cubic-foot interior accommodates most 9-by-13-inch pans, according to the manufacturer. Six quartz heating elements and a convection fan are part of its cooking system. The supplied accessories include two oven racks, a pizza pan, a roasting pan with broil rack and a mesh air-fry/dehydrate basket.
The appeal is flexibility: a household that alternates between reheating, baking and roasting has more reasons to reach for an oven-style appliance. That is a suitability judgment, not a tested claim that dinner will cook faster or taste better.
The counter-space reality check
The official exterior dimensions are 21.4 inches wide, 17.3 deep and 12.7 high. Breville’s manual requires at least four inches of clearance on both sides and six inches above during operation. The footprint alone is therefore not a complete placement plan.
Picture the door opening, a hot tray coming out and a safe landing spot beside it. If that picture requires moving half the kitchen, a smaller appliance deserves serious consideration. If the oven would stay comfortably accessible and replace jobs you currently spread across several gadgets, the tradeoff becomes easier to justify.
What could disappoint you
- It still creates cleaning work. Crumbs, drips and cooking accessories do not disappear because an appliance has clever settings.
- We cannot promise crispness or speed. We have not compared it with a drawer-style air fryer, measured temperature accuracy or tested batch consistency.
- Extra modes are valuable only when you use them. Someone who mostly warms one snack may get little benefit from a larger multifunction oven.
Follow the supplied manual for rack positions, cookware and cleaning. Unplug and cool the oven before cleaning; do not immerse it or cover the crumb tray with foil. For broader surface-care context, see our guide to cleaning stainless-steel appliances without streaks, while giving this oven’s own instructions priority.
Who should shortlist it?
Consider it if you have the space and genuinely want a baking-and-roasting companion that also air fries. Pause if your kitchen is tight, your portions are small or your current oven already handles the jobs you care about. A purchase should solve a repeated frustration, not create a new countertop obstacle.
Quick questions
Is this a hands-on recommendation?
No. It is an unrated, research-based assessment. Real-world noise, ease of cleaning and cooking results remain untested here.
Is a smart countertop oven automatically better than an air fryer?
No. The useful question is which form fits your meals, available space and tolerance for cleanup. More versatility does not automatically mean a better match.
