How to Wash a Rain Jacket Without Guessing the Care Settings

To wash a rain jacket, start with its care label, use a compatible liquid cleaner, rinse thoroughly and follow the garment's drying instructions. Do not assume that every waterproof coat can go in the dryer.

This beginner guide is for washable, uninsulated waterproof shells. It excludes waxed cotton, leather, down-filled coats and dry-clean-only garments. Allow about 20 minutes of active attention, plus your machine's wash, rinse and drying time. This is source-based guidance, not a hands-on test.

What you need

  • Rain jacket with readable care label and model-specific instructions
  • Compatible liquid detergent or technical-wear cleaner already approved for the jacket
  • Washing machine with the required cycle and rinse option
  • Drying space or tumble dryer, only as the care instructions permit

Steps

  • Read the label before choosing a cycle

Find the washing temperature, drying symbols and any special instructions. If the tag is missing, look up the exact model on its maker's website before washing. A generic rainwear guide cannot replace those limits.

Check for damaged seams or peeling layers. Ask the manufacturer about damage rather than expecting laundry to repair it. Waxed cotton needs a different care method. GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY also has special rules: no tumble drying, ironing or added DWR treatment.

  • Empty pockets and secure closures

Remove everything from the pockets. For conventional GORE-TEX shells, the maker directs closing front, pocket and underarm zips and fastening loose straps. Follow your own jacket's instructions if they differ. Keep heavily dirty clothing out of the same load.

  • Choose the cleaner and wash gently

Use the amount and type of liquid cleaner allowed by the garment maker and cleaner label. More detergent is not a shortcut to cleaner fabric. Patagonia recommends a mild technical-gear detergent; avoid fabric softener. For conventional GORE-TEX, avoid powders, bleach and stain removers as well.

Select the label-approved temperature and cycle. Do not copy a temperature from another jacket. Keep laundry products away from children and pets.

  • Rinse thoroughly, then dry as directed

For conventional GORE-TEX shells, use a second rinse and reduce spinning. REI also recommends two rinses to remove detergent. Follow the jacket's permitted line-dry or gentle tumble-dry method; avoid high heat.

Some conventional shells need a further low or warm drying stage to revive their existing water-repellent finish. Check the exact maker's instructions before doing this. Do not apply heat to a garment whose label forbids it. No iron or dryer is a universal requirement.

  • Check the result before adding treatments

Once the jacket is dry, check whether a little water beads on the outside. Dark, soaked-looking outer fabric can mean the water-repellent finish needs attention, not necessarily that the waterproof membrane has failed.

If beading does not return, consult the maker about a compatible durable water repellent (DWR) treatment. Follow both sets of instructions instead of using an arbitrary spray. Significant water inside after a brief rain exposure warrants a repair or manufacturer assessment.

    Troubleshooting and common questions

Still soapy? Check detergent dosage and rinse again using the garment's approved settings.

No dryer? Use the permitted drying method and ask the maker how to reactivate the finish. Do not improvise with high heat.

Will washing fix a leak? No promise: cleaning addresses dirt and finish performance, not torn fabric or failed seams.

Should every coat use this routine? No. For a different fabric, see our wool-sweater washing guide.
